The wrecks of Lake Garda: the 'Viking

We are in Malcesine 'The Pearl of Lake Garda', considered a treasure trove of special dives. Diving into the waters of the lake we find several unique wrecks, such as the Navene wreck, the Roma wreck, the Assenza wreck, the Trimellone shoal, and among these the so-called "Viking" wreck, a Venetian-style barge from the early 20th century, lying in buoyancy at a depth of 48 metres in the Val di Sogno bay, so known because of its prow that, to the first divers who spotted it, reminded them of a ship of the ancient Norse people.
In Malcesine, there was the 'Val di Sogno Stone Quarry', from which stones were sent to the various towns that requested them, especially in the lower part of the lake, in places such as Peschiera, Desenzano, Manerba; with the stones from the Val di Sogno, piers, banks, and walkways were built. The navigation from one side of the lake to the other was very intense, the sudden storms, which still today rage suddenly, with strong winds and high waves, have over time caused many accidents and shipwrecks from north to south, and wrecks of boats sunk at various times, even at considerable depths, are still discovered. There are several theories about the sinking of the 'Viking'. What is certain is that the marks left by the flames are still visible on the planking.
